Computer thief backs up victim's data

A Swedish professor who had his laptop stolen was relieved when he received a USB memory stick with the computer's contents in the mail a week later.

The Local reported that the professor left his backpack, which had his computer, keys, calendar and other documents inside, in the stairwell of his apartment building for a few minutes, but it was gone when he returned.

But when he returned to the stairwell again after ringing police, he was surprised to see the backpack back in its original place with all his belongings in it, except for his computer.

The considerate thief had yet one more surprise in store - an envelope containing a memory stick which had all of the professor's documents from his laptop was mailed to his house about a week later.

The professor told the local Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper the incident had given him "hope for humanity".
